Dear friends and supporters:
As you know, Bill C-440, which would have allowed U.S. Iraq war resisters to apply for residency in Canada, was narrowly defeated at second reading – by just seven votes.
Yet Parliament has already voted twice to stop the deportations and let war resisters stay. More importantly, the majority of the Canadian people believe that men and women who refused to participate in the illegal, immoral Iraq War should be given safe haven in Canada. The vast majority of the Canadians oppose the Iraq War, and they don't believe people should be thrown in jail for exercising their human right of conscience.
The recent release by Wikileaks of almost 400,000 documents detailing the horrors of the Iraq War confirms that these war resisters were right to say no.
Even though the minority Conservative government has so far refused to do the right thing and let war resisters stay, this fight is far from over. War resisters will continue to work with their supporters in Canada’s Parliament to prevent any deportations and to pressure the government to respect the motions already adopted. They will continue to appeal to the Canadian courts and the Canadian people. The War Resisters Support Campaign is more determined than ever to stand by them.
